With summer heating up and the state parks now fully open, there’s no better time to pack a bag, grab the kids, and get out into the natural wonders that surround us here in Northern New York. From the crystal-clear waters of Lake Ontario to the rugged beauty of the Adirondack foothills and the magic of the Thousand Islands, our region is a summer playground waiting to be rediscovered.
For Watertown families, the call of the wild is just a short drive away. You don’t need a plane ticket or a reservation months in advance—just a sense of adventure and maybe a few granola bars.
Swim, Hike, Repeat
Westcott Beach State Park, Southwick Beach, and Sandy Island Beach offer some of the best freshwater swimming in the Northeast, right on the eastern shore of Lake Ontario. These parks are perfect for a day trip or a weekend getaway, with lifeguarded beaches, picnic spots, and enough sandcastle real estate to make any child’s summer.
Prefer boots to bathing suits? The North Country is crisscrossed with trails that range from easy strolls to rigorous hikes. Head out to Wellesley Island State Park or the trails near Black Lake and take in views that haven’t changed much since the Iroquois first paddled through. Keep your eyes open—you might spot a bald eagle, a great blue heron, or even a shy deer crossing your path.
Unplug and Reconnect
Getting out of the city doesn’t just give your family fresh air—it gives them perspective. In a world of screens and schedules, there’s nothing like skipping stones, roasting marshmallows, or teaching your kids how to identify a maple tree. Whether it’s camping overnight or simply spending the afternoon by the shore, these are the moments that turn into memories.
The Thousand Islands Await
Just up the river, the Thousand Islands offer island hopping, lighthouse tours, and boat rides through some of the most picturesque waters in America. Boldt Castle, Singer Castle, and dozens of hidden coves are just waiting to be explored. And if you’ve never watched a summer sunset over the St. Lawrence River, you owe it to yourself to make the trip.
It’s All Right Here
While some folks spend thousands to go on vacation, those of us in Watertown are lucky enough to live just minutes away from one of the most scenic, unspoiled natural regions in the state. Summer doesn’t last forever—so make this one count.
Get outside. Get moving. And get your family into nature. Lake Ontario is open. The trails are calling. And the best of the North Country is just around the corner.
