Lake & River
The waters of Eastern Lake Ontario, the St. Lawrence River, and the Thousand Islands define life throughout Northern New York and Eastern Ontario. More than scenic landscapes, these waterways have shaped the region’s history, economy, transportation, recreation, military significance, and communities for centuries. From the open waters of Lake Ontario to the narrow channels winding through the Thousand Islands, this internationally recognized freshwater system connects people, businesses, and communities on both sides of the United States and Canadian border.
The transition from Lake Ontario into the St. Lawrence River begins near Cape Vincent and continues northeast through one of North America’s most remarkable freshwater landscapes. The Thousand Islands archipelago, consisting of more than 1,800 islands, stretches approximately 50 miles along the international border, creating one of the world’s premier destinations for boating, fishing, diving, sightseeing, and waterfront tourism.
Communities including Alexandria Bay, Clayton, Cape Vincent, Chaumont, Henderson Harbor, Sackets Harbor, and Kingston each maintain their own unique relationship with the water. Marinas, commercial harbors, public boat launches, waterfront parks, historic lighthouses, charter fishing fleets, and seasonal tourism support thousands of residents and visitors every year. The region welcomes recreational boaters from across North America while also serving as an important commercial shipping corridor connecting the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean through the St. Lawrence Seaway.
These waterways have witnessed centuries of history. Indigenous peoples navigated these waters long before European settlement. During the French and Indian War and the War of 1812, control of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River proved strategically vital to both American and British forces. Shipbuilding centers such as Sackets Harbor and Kingston became critical naval bases, while many historic shipwrecks remain preserved beneath the waters of Eastern Lake Ontario and the Thousand Islands, providing an important underwater archaeological record of the region’s past.
Today, the lake and river remain central to the regional economy. Charter fishing for salmon, lake trout, bass, northern pike, muskellunge, and walleye attracts anglers from around the world. Recreational boating, sailing, kayaking, scuba diving, waterfront festivals, cruise tours, camping, birdwatching, and photography continue to make the region one of New York State’s premier outdoor destinations. The shoreline communities each offer distinct experiences while sharing the common identity of life along one of the largest freshwater systems on Earth.
