Henderson Harbor, New York

Nestled along the eastern shore of Lake Ontario, Henderson Harbor is one of Northern New York’s premier waterfront destinations. Known for its protected natural harbor, world-class fishing, sailing, boating, and breathtaking sunsets, the harbor has attracted visitors for more than two centuries. Located within the Town of Henderson in southern Jefferson County, Henderson Harbor combines the charm of a quiet lakeside village with some of the finest freshwater recreation found anywhere on the Great Lakes.

The harbor has played an important role in the region’s history since long before European settlement. Indigenous peoples used the area as an important travel route, while French explorer Samuel de Champlain passed through the region in 1615. During the French and Indian War, the French constructed a fort on nearby Association Island, recognizing the harbor’s strategic importance on Lake Ontario. The Town of Henderson was established in 1806 and named after landowner William Henderson, while the community now known as Henderson Harbor was originally called Naples before adopting its present name.

Throughout the nineteenth century, Henderson Harbor became an important center for Great Lakes commerce and shipbuilding. More than forty schooners were constructed along nearby Stony Creek, helping transport goods throughout the Great Lakes. By the late 1800s, the harbor had also become a fashionable summer retreat for prominent American families. Among those who vacationed here were Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, CIA Director Allen Dulles, architect Daniel Burnham, and other nationally known figures who built seasonal homes overlooking the harbor.

Today, Henderson Harbor is best known for outdoor recreation. Anglers from across the country travel here to pursue Chinook salmon, coho salmon, steelhead, lake trout, brown trout, smallmouth bass, northern pike, perch, and walleye. The harbor is home to numerous charter fishing captains, marinas, boat launches, yacht clubs, and waterfront restaurants that serve residents and visitors throughout the boating season. Sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, swimming, and pleasure boating are all popular activities during the warmer months, while the surrounding countryside offers opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, hunting, and snowmobiling during the winter.

Henderson Harbor also serves as the gateway to some of the finest public beaches on Lake Ontario. Nearby Southwick Beach State Park, Westcott Beach State Park, and the sandy shoreline along the eastern end of Lake Ontario attract thousands of visitors each summer. Combined with waterfront cottages, campgrounds, seasonal events, and a vibrant marina community, the harbor has become one of the North Country’s premier vacation destinations.

Although tourism plays a major role in the local economy, Henderson Harbor remains a close-knit community where local businesses, volunteer organizations, churches, and civic groups help preserve its welcoming small-town atmosphere. Residents enjoy a quality of life built around the water, while visitors return year after year to experience one of New York State’s most beautiful natural harbors.
