Founded in the early 1800s, Evans Mills grew around the mills established on West Creek, a tributary of the Indian River. The community was named after mill owner Ethni Evans, whose operations helped establish the village as a local center of commerce. For a brief period during the nineteenth century, the community was known as “Evansville” before returning to its present name. The Village of Evans Mills was officially incorporated in 1874 and has continued to evolve while preserving its historic small-town character.

Today, Evans Mills is closely connected to Fort Drum. The village is home to military families, local businesses, restaurants, hotels, healthcare providers, retail shops, and professional services that support one of the largest Army installations in the United States.
