Castorland, New York

Located in northeastern Lewis County near the confluence of the Beaver and Black rivers, Castorland is one of Northern New York’s most historically unique villages. Though small in size, Castorland occupies a remarkable place in both New York and international history as the site of an ambitious French settlement established in the years following the French Revolution. Today, the village is known for its quiet rural character, rich heritage, strong agricultural roots, and easy access to the Tug Hill Plateau, the western Adirondacks, and the Black River Valley. The name **Castorland** is derived from the French word for “Land of the Beaver.”

In 1792, a group of French investors known as **La Compagnie de New York** purchased more than 200,000 acres of wilderness in what is now Lewis and Jefferson counties. Their goal was to establish a new colony where French citizens fleeing the turmoil of the French Revolution could begin new lives. Although the settlement faced harsh winters, isolation, financial difficulties, and poor planning, the Castorland Colony played an important role in opening Northern New York to future settlement. While the colony itself ultimately failed, the surveys, roads, and maps created during the project laid the groundwork for the development of the Black River country.

The Village of Castorland was incorporated in 1883 and has remained a close-knit rural community ever since. Agriculture continues to be an important part of the local economy, with dairy farming, crop production, maple syrup, and family-owned businesses helping preserve the area’s rural character. Residents value the quiet pace of life, scenic countryside, and strong community spirit that define this historic Lewis County village.

Outdoor recreation surrounds Castorland. The nearby Black River, Beaver River, Tug Hill Plateau, and western Adirondack foothills provide opportunities for fishing, paddling, hunting, hiking, camping, snowmobiling, and wildlife viewing throughout the year. During the winter months, visitors enjoy easy access to Tug Hill’s renowned snowmobile trail system and some of the heaviest lake-effect snowfall in the eastern United States.
