Tucked along the Sugar River in the southern reaches of Lewis County, Constableville is a historic village that combines small-town charm with easy access to the Tug Hill Plateau, the western Adirondacks, and the Black River Valley. Located within the Town of West Turin on New York State Route 26, Constableville has served as a center of agriculture, commerce, and community life for more than two centuries. The village was first settled around 1796 and is named after William Constable, one of the region’s early landowners.

Constableville played an important role in the early settlement of Lewis County. As one of the first permanent communities established in the Town of West Turin, the village grew around mills, farms, and businesses that relied on the waters of the Sugar River. During the nineteenth century, Constableville became a thriving commercial center serving surrounding farming communities and travelers heading toward the Adirondacks and Tug Hill. Several of its historic buildings remain today, preserving the character of one of the county’s oldest villages.

History is woven throughout the community. The village is home to Constable Hall, one of New York State’s finest examples of Federal-style architecture and one of the region’s best-preserved historic homes. Built between 1810 and 1819 for the Constable family, the limestone mansion is now operated as a museum and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The village’s historic district and several additional landmarks reflect Constableville’s importance during the early development of Northern New York.

Outdoor recreation is central to life in Constableville. The village sits at the gateway to the Tug Hill Plateau and western Adirondacks, placing residents and visitors within minutes of excellent snowmobiling, hiking, fishing, hunting, camping, kayaking, and wildlife viewing. During winter, the surrounding countryside becomes a destination for snowmobilers exploring hundreds of miles of interconnected Tug Hill trails. In warmer months, scenic country roads, forests, streams, and nearby state lands attract outdoor enthusiasts from across the Northeast.

Community pride remains one of Constableville’s defining characteristics. Annual events, volunteer fire department activities, local businesses, churches, and civic organizations continue to bring residents together throughout the year.
