A grist mill built in 1804 harnessed the power of the Indian River and helped fuel the area’s early growth. The Town of Philadelphia was officially created in 1821 from part of the Town of Le Ray, while the village incorporated as a separate municipality in 1872.

The Indian River continues to define the community today. Flowing through the center of the village, it provides opportunities for fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and wildlife viewing while adding to the area’s natural beauty.
