Black River, New York

Nestled along the banks of the Black River just east of Watertown and minutes from Fort Drum, the Village of Black River is a close-knit North Country community with a rich industrial history and deep military connections. Located within the towns of Le Ray and Rutland in Jefferson County, Black River has long been known for its scenic waterfront, historic neighborhoods, and strong sense of community. The village was incorporated in 1891 and today remains an important part of the greater Watertown-Fort Drum region.

The community traces its origins to the early 1800s, when settlers recognized the tremendous waterpower provided by the Black River. A mill established around 1806 became the foundation for the growing settlement, which was originally known as Lockport before adopting the name Black River. The river powered mills, supported local businesses, and helped establish the village as a center of commerce during the nineteenth century. Like many North Country communities, Black River experienced both periods of prosperity and hardship, including a devastating downtown fire in 1890 that destroyed much of the village’s business district. In response, residents organized what would become the Black River Fire Department, one of Jefferson County’s oldest continuously operating volunteer fire departments.

Today, Black River enjoys a close relationship with nearby Fort Drum. Many active-duty Soldiers, military families, veterans, and civilian employees choose to make the village their home because of its convenient location and welcoming atmosphere. Local businesses, schools, churches, parks, and community organizations help create a strong sense of belonging while supporting both longtime residents and newcomers to the region.

The Black River itself remains one of the community’s defining features. Flowing from the Adirondack foothills to Lake Ontario, the river provides opportunities for fishing, kayaking, canoeing, wildlife viewing, and photography while contributing to the natural beauty that surrounds the village. Nearby parks, trails, and outdoor recreation areas make Black River an excellent base for exploring Jefferson County, the Thousand Islands, Tug Hill, and the Adirondacks.
