Carthage, New York

Situated along the scenic Black River in eastern Jefferson County, Carthage is one of Northern New York’s most historic villages and an important gateway to Fort Drum and the western Adirondacks. Rich in industrial heritage, military connections, and small-town character, Carthage has long served as a regional center for commerce, manufacturing, and community life. Its location just south of Fort Drum and along major transportation corridors makes it one of Jefferson County’s most strategically important communities. The village was incorporated in 1869 and today remains one of the North Country’s largest villages.

Originally settled around 1798 and known as Long Falls, Carthage developed because of the tremendous waterpower provided by the Black River. During the nineteenth century, paper mills, lumber mills, foundries, and manufacturing businesses transformed the village into one of the region’s leading industrial centers. Several devastating fires during the 1800s destroyed large portions of downtown, but each time the community rebuilt, creating much of the historic architecture that still defines the village today.

Today, Carthage enjoys a unique relationship with nearby Fort Drum. Thousands of Soldiers, military families, civilian employees, and veterans live, work, shop, and attend school in the community. This close partnership has helped shape Carthage’s economy for decades, supporting local businesses, restaurants, healthcare providers, housing, and community organizations. The village serves as an important residential and commercial hub for many members of the military community while maintaining its own strong identity and traditions.

The Black River remains the heart of Carthage. Flowing through the center of the village, it provides opportunities for fishing, paddling, photography, and recreation while serving as a reminder of the waterway that powered the community’s early industries. Historic downtown Carthage features locally owned businesses, restaurants, professional offices, churches, parks, and civic organizations that continue to contribute to the village’s welcoming atmosphere.

Education plays a central role in the community through the Carthage Central School District, which serves students from Carthage, West Carthage, Champion, Wilna, and surrounding communities.
