The history of Clayton stretches back long before European settlement. Indigenous peoples occupied the area for centuries, using the St. Lawrence River as an important transportation corridor. The settlement was originally known by several names, including French Creek and Cornelia, before being renamed Clayton in 1831 in honor of U.S. Senator John M. Clayton of Delaware. The Town of Clayton was established in 1833, and the Village of Clayton was incorporated in 1872.

Clayton’s location along the St. Lawrence River made it a natural center for commerce during the nineteenth century. The area’s vast forests supported a thriving timber industry, while local shipyards built schooners and steamships that helped open the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River to commercial navigation. Granite quarried from nearby islands was used in prominent construction projects throughout the Northeast, and the arrival of the railroad in 1873 transformed Clayton into one of America’s premier summer resort communities. Elegant hotels, grand river estates, marinas, and guide services attracted visitors from across the United States, establishing a tourism industry that remains the backbone of the local economy today.
