Nestled on the western edge of the Adirondack Park and at the gateway to the Tug Hill Plateau, Boonville is one of Northern New York’s premier destinations for outdoor recreation, history, and small-town living. Founded by agents of the Holland Land Company in the late eighteenth century, Boonville has grown into a community that proudly preserves its historic character while embracing its role as one of the North Country’s most popular tourism destinations.

Settlement began in 1795 when Gerrit Boon, an agent of the Holland Land Company, established a sawmill and gristmill along Mill Creek. The settlement was originally known as Kortenaer, named after a Dutch naval admiral, before eventually becoming Boonville in honor of Gerrit Boon. The Town of Boonville was established in 1805, and the Village of Boonville was incorporated in 1855. During the nineteenth century, the construction of the Black River Canal transformed the community into an important transportation and commercial center, bringing prosperity to businesses, farms, and industries throughout the region.

Today, Boonville is best known as the gateway to the Tug Hill and western Adirondacks. The region attracts visitors from across the Northeast for its legendary lake-effect snowfall, extensive snowmobile trail system, and outstanding opportunities for skiing, hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, mountain biking, and paddling. During the warmer months, residents and visitors explore nearby forests, lakes, rivers, and scenic byways, while autumn transforms the surrounding hardwood forests into one of New York’s premier destinations for fall foliage.

Boonville is also home to the Ermine C. White Gallery, the Oneida County Fairgrounds, and the annual NYS Woodsmen’s Field Days, one of the largest forestry and lumberjack festivals in the Northeast. Every August, thousands of visitors gather to watch logging competitions, equipment demonstrations, craft vendors, and family entertainment celebrating the region’s deep forestry heritage.
