Barnes Corners

Barnes Corners, New York

High atop the Tug Hill Plateau in western Lewis County, Barnes Corners is one of Northern New York’s most recognizable destinations for outdoor recreation and winter adventure. Located at the junction of New York State Route 177 and County Route 194 in the Town of Pinckney, this small hamlet has earned a reputation far beyond its size as one of the gateways to the Tug Hill region. Whether visitors arrive for world-famous lake-effect snowfall, snowmobiling, hunting, hiking, or simply to experience the beauty of the North Country, Barnes Corners has become synonymous with the Tug Hill experience.

Settlement began in 1805 when brothers Levi and Elisha Barnes arrived from Connecticut. The hamlet was named in honor of Elisha Barnes and quickly developed into an important crossroads serving the surrounding farming and logging communities. During the nineteenth century, Barnes Corners featured hotels, churches, schools, general stores, blacksmith shops, cheese factories, sawmills, and other businesses that supported local residents and travelers crossing the plateau. Although much smaller today, the hamlet remains the commercial and social center of the Town of Pinckney.

Barnes Corners is perhaps best known for its extraordinary winter weather. Situated within the Tug Hill snowbelt, the community regularly receives more than 200 inches of snow annually, with some winters producing considerably more. These conditions have made Barnes Corners one of the premier snowmobiling destinations in the northeastern United States. Hundreds of miles of groomed trails connect the hamlet to communities throughout Lewis, Jefferson, and Oswego counties, drawing thousands of visitors every winter. Snowmobilers, cross-country skiers, snowshoers, and winter photographers travel here each season to experience some of New York’s finest winter recreation.

While winter is the community’s busiest season, Barnes Corners offers outstanding recreation year-round. The surrounding forests, streams, and state lands provide excellent opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, birdwatching, hunting, fishing, camping, and wildlife photography. During autumn, the hardwood forests surrounding the hamlet become one of the North Country’s premier destinations for fall foliage. Scenic country roads, maple forests, and rolling hills make the area popular with photographers and outdoor enthusiasts throughout every season.

Agriculture and forestry remain important parts of the local economy. Family farms, maple syrup producers, timber operations, and locally owned businesses continue to preserve the rural landscape that has defined Barnes Corners for generations. Residents take pride in the community’s small-town character, strong volunteer spirit, and close connection to the natural beauty of the Tug Hill Plateau.
