Nestled along the southern shore of Chaumont Bay on Eastern Lake Ontario, the Village of Chaumont is one of Northern New York’s hidden waterfront treasures. Located within the Town of Lyme in Jefferson County, Chaumont is known for its quiet harbor, historic village center, outstanding fishing, boating, and small-town character. While home to just over 600 year-round residents, the village becomes a vibrant destination during the warmer months as seasonal residents, anglers, and boaters return to enjoy one of the largest freshwater bays in the world.

European settlement began in 1802 after an earlier settlement attempt nearby proved unsuccessful. The village was named in honor of Jacques-Donatien Le Ray de Chaumont, whose family played an important role in early American history and land ownership in Northern New York. During the nineteenth century, Chaumont developed around its natural harbor, with fishing, commercial shipping, and shipbuilding serving as the foundation of the local economy. The village was officially incorporated in 1874 and has preserved much of its historic waterfront character ever since.

Chaumont’s greatest natural asset is Chaumont Bay, a broad, sheltered embayment of Lake Ontario renowned throughout the Northeast for its exceptional boating and fishing. The bay provides ideal conditions for sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and recreational boating while supporting nationally recognized fisheries for smallmouth bass, northern pike, walleye, yellow perch, and muskellunge. The protected waters and scenic shoreline make Chaumont a favorite destination for both serious anglers and families seeking a quieter alternative to larger waterfront communities.

The village’s historic downtown reflects its nineteenth-century roots. Many of its commercial buildings, homes, churches, and civic structures remain part of the Chaumont Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Several additional buildings throughout the village—including the historic railroad station, Chaumont House, and other landmark structures—highlight the community’s architectural and maritime heritage.

Although tourism and recreation are important economic drivers, Chaumont remains a year-round community supported by small businesses, agriculture, education, marine services, and residents who value its peaceful waterfront lifestyle. Public parks, a village beach, marinas, boat launches, and nearby natural areas provide opportunities for outdoor recreation throughout the year. During winter, the surrounding region becomes popular for snowmobiling, ice fishing, and other seasonal activities.

Located along New York State Route 12E between Watertown and Cape Vincent, Chaumont also serves as an excellent base for exploring the Thousand Islands, Eastern Lake Ontario, and nearby communities including Three Mile Bay, Point Peninsula, Henderson Harbor, Cape Vincent, and Clayton. Its central location offers easy access to both the St. Lawrence River and the open waters of Lake Ontario.
