Onondaga budget vote today puts Micron-related infrastructure in focus
Onondaga County legislators are scheduled to consider a $1.7 billion budget for 2027 today, October 6, as the region weighs the infrastructure and public-service demands accompanying Micron’s development. WAER reported Monday that public testimony included calls for stronger wastewater safeguards and greater transparency around Micron-related spending, alongside community health and child-welfare priorities. The legislature’s committee revisions added six child-welfare caseworkers and placed roughly $3.1 million in contingency until departments provide additional spending details. The full legislature meets at 1 p.m. in the county courthouse’s Legislative Chambers, with the session open to the public and available by livestream. The spending plan remains a proposal ahead of today’s vote.

Hamilton County residents can help shape the connection between outdoor recreation and their downtown businesses at a workshop today, October 6, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Long Lake Town Hall, 1204 Main Street. The session follows Monday’s gathering in Inlet and is part of the Recreation Economy for Rural Communities program, for which the county was selected. Participation is free, and residents may attend for the portion of the day they can manage. Advance registration is requested to help organizers plan refreshments, but it is not required.

Lake Placid finale settles downhill mountain-bike World Cup titles
The 2026 UCI Downhill World Cup season concluded at Whiteface Mountain on Sunday, October 4, with Lisa Bouladou and Luke Meier-Smith winning the final races and Asa Vermette and Valentina Höll securing the overall championships. Vermette finished eighth in the finale, enough to take the men’s season title ahead of Jordan Williams in his first elite campaign. Meier-Smith repeated his Lake Placid victory from the previous year, while Bouladou collected her first elite World Cup win. The championship conclusion brought international mountain-bike competition back to the Lake Placid Olympic Sites, where Whiteface’s two-kilometer downhill course provided the final test. Sunday’s race winners and the overall season champions were different riders, reflecting the points accumulated across the series.
