Daily Brief
SACKETS HARBOR, N.Y. Wednesday’s Northern New York Daily Brief brings together five verified regional updates, with roadwork beginning today, a county office change, a Fort Drum access notice, college soccer and a public hearing to watch.
Point Salubrious paving is scheduled to begin today
Drivers on Point Salubrious in the Town of Lyme have a new phase of roadwork to plan around. A town notice relaying Jefferson County Highway Department information schedules paving on the south side, or left fork, for October 21 through October 23, subject to weather. The work area runs from the vicinity of 9125 Route 125 toward Indian Point. Milling was scheduled for October 16 through October 20. On the north side, shoreline work continues, and paving dates have not yet been determined. The town says that paving and the continuing Morris Tract Road bridge work are to be completed before Thanksgiving. Drivers should follow work-zone directions and allow crews room to work.
Lewis County parks office ends walk-in visits and counter permit sales
Lewis County announced an immediate change Tuesday to operations at its Recreation, Forestry and Parks office in Lowville. ATV trail permits are no longer sold in person at that office; buyers may use the online route or participating local businesses listed by the county. Office visits are now by appointment, with walk-ins no longer accepted. Residents or visitors who need to meet department staff should call 315-376-5972 before traveling. The October 20 announcement says the changes are intended to help manage daily operations while maintaining assistance. The distinction matters for anyone planning a trip: an appointment is needed for office assistance, while permit purchases have moved to other channels.
Fort Drum announces Friday access change for the 4900 area
Fort Drum is advising people traveling to the 4900 area to prepare for a traffic change on Friday, October 23. The installation says access through Eighth Street will end, with the area instead reached through the newly constructed Ontario Avenue and Seventh Street connector. The notice specifically identifies the NCO Academy, Range Control and other buildings in that area. This is an access-route change, rather than an announcement that those facilities are closing. Anyone with an appointment or duty assignment there should review the installation’s posted traffic plan before Friday and follow the signs in place. Fort Drum’s official homepage carries the notice and a link to that plan.
Potsdam and Canton soccer teams have two Wednesday meetings scheduled
SUNY Potsdam’s published athletics schedule lists two soccer games against SUNY Canton for today, Wednesday, October 21. The men’s game is scheduled in Canton at 6 p.m., while the women’s game is listed for Maxcy Turf Field in Potsdam at 7 p.m. The different sites and start times are worth checking before heading out to support either team. These are scheduled fixtures, not completed results, and any subsequent changes should be checked with the host athletics department. Potsdam included both games in its October 17 weekly athletics announcement. The evening pairing gives North Country college soccer supporters two local matchups on the same day.
Lyme sets Thursday hearing on proposed tax levy limit override
Town of Lyme residents have an opportunity Thursday, October 22, to comment on a proposed local law concerning the tax levy limit. The hearing is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Town of Lyme Office, 12175 State Route 12E in Chaumont. The town’s notice, dated October 15, describes a proposal to override the limit established in General Municipal Law Section 3-c. It does not announce that the proposal has already been adopted or establish a final tax increase. The full text is available through the Town Clerk during normal business hours. Residents may attend to speak or submit written comments to the clerk before the stated hearing date and time.
