Velasquez–Barrigar Clash: Lifestyle Comments Ignite City Council Race Debate
The Watertown City Council race has officially gone off-script again — this time over comments made by local personality Donnie Lee Barrigar, who took a personal swing at candidate Anthony Velasquez’s lifestyle.
Let’s be clear: The Watertown Post doesn’t care how anyone lives their life — so long as it’s not being forced on others or used as a political weapon. Barrigar’s remarks didn’t address taxes, zoning, roads, or crime. They were aimed at Velasquez’s personal life — and that’s not debate, that’s a detour into the ditch.
When The Watertown Post asked Velasquez directly if Barrigar’s allegations were true, he responded simply, “No.”
America, at its best, has always been a glorious mashup — a Golden Age republic built from every background, belief, and orientation imaginable. The strength of this country isn’t sameness. It’s the clash of differences that still agree on one thing: freedom.
And that includes free speech. The Watertown Post is not endorsing any candidate in this race — but we will defend the principle that all voices get heard, even the ones that make you roll your eyes. Because free speech isn’t supposed to be comfortable. It’s supposed to be free.
President Trump’s return to the national stage has reminded America that speaking your mind is not a crime. It’s a duty. Golden Age America doesn’t demand you all think alike — it demands the courage to speak, even when it’s unpopular.
So whether you’re standing with Velasquez, nodding with Barrigar, or just wishing this whole circus would wrap up, remember this: disagreement isn’t destruction. The Watertown Post will keep the mic open for every voice — because once we start silencing each other, this experiment called America is over.
