By Hans Wilder for The Watertown Post
In Watertown, New York, a city where half the folks prides themselves on its pro-Trump values, the current leadership seems to be more out of touch with its conservative majority than ever before. At the forefront of this disconnect is Mayor Sarah Compo Pierce, who has been walking a tightrope between maintaining her “neutral” stance and siding with the very forces that oppose the Trump movement and the Golden Age. This has left many questioning her true allegiances.
A Mayor at Odds with Her Constituents
While Mayor Compo Pierce presents herself as a REPUBLICAN, one can’t help but notice the glaring contradictions in her actions. A prime example came when, amid an ongoing feud with certain City Council members, she sought advice from none other than New York’s Democratic Attorney General Letitia James. Letitia James has built her political career on attacking Donald Trump, from suing his businesses to leading the charge in a civil fraud case that imposed $450 million in penalties.
For Mayor Compo Pierce to turn to James for legal guidance is, to say the least, baffling. It’s one thing to seek advice from a neutral party; it’s another entirely to turn to a politician who has openly fought against the very movement that most Watertown’s residents support. This move, more than anything, has reinforced the suspicion that Compo Pierce is a Republican only in name “RINO”, more comfortable seeking favor from Democrats than representing the pro-Trump constituency that elected her.
In a city where many stand behind Trump, Mayor Compo Pierce’s actions feel like a betrayal. She cannot claim to be aligned with the Republican Party while actively seeking support from one of Trump’s fiercest adversaries.
The City Council’s Culture of Infighting
The disconnect doesn’t end with the mayor. The City Council is equally out of step with Watertown’s conservative values. Rather than advocating for the traditional values that define the North Country – values that many local families hold dear – the council has spent most of its time embroiled in petty infighting and personal vendettas. Ethics complaints, power struggles, and name-calling have been the norm, while critical conservative causes have been left by the wayside.
In recent years, the council has spent more time squabbling over internal issues than fighting against the policies coming out of Albany or Washington that hurt working-class families. Issues such as unfunded mandates from New York State or Governor Hochul’s gun restrictions have gone unchallenged. Meanwhile, the Biden administration’s economic and energy policies, which have adversely affected blue-collar workers, have been met with silence.
The fact that Watertown’s City Council has failed to take a stand on these issues speaks volumes. Instead of standing up for local values, the council has become consumed by internal drama, leaving the people it’s meant to serve without a voice on critical issues.
A Call for Real Conservative Leadership
The current state of Watertown’s government is nothing short of a missed opportunity. With the collapse of the Democratic Party nationally, there was an opening for a realignment in the city’s leadership, one that reflected the conservative values of many Watertown voters. Unfortunately, that opportunity has been squandered.
What Watertown needs now is leadership that genuinely represents its pro-Trump, pro-freedom, pro-American populace. The city deserves officials who are not afraid to publicly support the candidates their constituents support, who will fight for the issues that matter most to them, and who won’t pander to the very forces that are undermining the values that have made America great.
This means holding the current leadership accountable. Why didn’t our city officials support Donald Trump in 2024, when nearly HALF of Watertown’s residents did? Why is Mayor Compo Pierce seeking advice from a Democratic Attorney General who is actively hostile to Trump? Why are council members so consumed with internal power struggles that they ignore the pressing issues that affect the people of Watertown?
If the answers aren’t satisfactory, then it’s time for a change. Watertown’s leaders need to embrace our pro-Trump, conservative values or step aside. The era of the Democratic Party in Watertown may hopefully be over, and the time for accountability is now. The people of Watertown deserve leadership that honors the values of God, family, country, and freedom – values that run deep in this community. If current leaders won’t stand for those values, it’s time for new leadership that will.
The Path Forward
The future of Watertown is in the hands of its voters. It’s time to demand better from those in office. We need true conservatives who will proudly represent the people of Watertown, not just those who are comfortable straddling the fence in the name of “neutrality.”
The collapse of the Democratic Party should have been an opportunity to realign local leadership with the values of the conservative majority. But if that opportunity is to be seized, we need new leaders who will fight for the issues that matter to us. Watertown is a pro-Trump city, LIKE IT OR NOT; and it’s high time the local government reflects that.
The time for change is now – and the era of weak, fence-sitting leadership must come to an end. The people of Watertown deserve leaders who represent them, not those who represent only their own political interests. The era of accountability is just beginning, and it’s time for Watertown’s leaders to either get on board with the people’s values – or get out of the way.

I honestly don’t care about the drama. Just fix the roads and keep things running.
Hey Hansy have you snorted your cocaine today yet?
I don’t see the issue here. The mayor and council are doing what they think is best for the city. Not every decision has to align with Trump supporters.
Finally, a voice for the silent majority in Watertown. Our leadership should reflect our values, not the establishment’s.
Compo Pierce and the council is so out of touch with what Watertown stands for. We need leaders who will stand up for what’s right, not cozy up to the Democraats.
