City of the Future
City of the Future
There was a time when signs welcoming visitors to Watertown proudly proclaimed it the “City of the Future.” While that slogan has largely faded from public view, the idea behind it remains just as relevant today.
The City of the Future is the Watertown Post’s home for imagination, innovation, and possibility.
This is where we ask one simple question:
What if?
What if downtown looked different? What if a forgotten property became a landmark? What if new technology changed the way people lived, worked, traveled, or did business in Northern New York? What if today’s vacant lot became tomorrow’s gathering place? What if the next great idea was already sitting in someone’s imagination, waiting to be shared?
The articles in this section are not official city plans, government proposals, or development announcements. They are conversations about possibilities. Some ideas may be practical. Others may seem ambitious, unconventional, or even a little outrageous. That’s intentional. Every great community grows because people are willing to imagine something that doesn’t yet exist.
Here you’ll find concept artwork, architectural renderings, redevelopment ideas, transportation concepts, downtown visions, technology, artificial intelligence, economic development, tourism initiatives, public spaces, environmental projects, historical “what if” scenarios, and thought-provoking editorials about the future of Watertown and Northern New York.
Innovation begins with conversation. Not every idea belongs in the future—but every worthwhile future begins with an idea.
The Watertown Post believes that communities thrive when people are willing to think beyond today’s challenges and imagine tomorrow’s opportunities. Whether exploring bold redevelopment concepts, visualizing new public spaces, rethinking transportation, or simply asking “why not?”, the City of the Future is where creativity meets civic discussion.
The future isn’t something we wait for.
It’s something we build.
