The Northern New York Daily Brief for Friday, October 30, 2026, brings five developments from across the region.
Carthage and West Carthage receive $9.8 million for shared water system
New York has awarded a $9.8 million grant to the joint water system serving Carthage and West Carthage. The villages plan to use the money to replace aging water mains and fire hydrants. In West Carthage, work includes a main near Stone and High streets; in Carthage, a main near Mechanic Street is on the list. Local officials say the improvements should restore proper fire flow at hydrants that have been out of service. A private contractor is expected to do much of the work, with construction planned to begin in November and continue for several months.
Lowville 7-Eleven challenges its property assessment
The operator of Lowville’s 7-Eleven has sued the town over a property assessment of $988,000, seeking a figure closer to $98,800. Its filing argues that the current assessment is excessive and unequal compared with similar properties. Village Mayor Danny Salmon opposes the reduction, saying it would shift some of the tax burden to other residents and governments. The dispute is in court; the requested reduction has not been granted. The town and the company’s law firm did not respond to the local station’s requests for comment when its report was published.
Zoo New York names Gabriel Yerdon its next executive director
Zoo New York in Watertown’s Thompson Park has appointed Gabriel Yerdon as its next executive director, effective November 16. The zoo’s board cited his experience with animal care, operations and environmental work. Yerdon described growing up on an Oswego County dairy farm, working at a wildlife rehabilitation clinic in Brazil, and later working with the Tug Hill Commission and the state Department of Environmental Conservation. He said he wants to build on the zoo’s conservation, education and visitor programs. The appointment takes effect next month, rather than immediately.
Blakeman cancels planned Sunday Watertown campaign rally
Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman has canceled a campaign rally that had been planned for Sunday in Watertown. No reason for the cancellation was announced in the local report. The Republican National Committee announced Vice President JD Vance would speak Monday at a separate rally in Rome, beginning at 9:15 a.m. at the Skydome Hangar, 592 Hangar Road. That announcement does not reinstate the canceled Sunday Watertown event. Anyone making travel plans should verify the campaign’s current event information.
Copenhagen boys advance to Section 3 soccer final
Copenhagen’s boys soccer team defeated McGraw 1-0 in a Section 3 Class D semifinal and will play for the sectional title Saturday at 3 p.m. at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill. A direct kick by Caleb Thenn led to a McGraw own goal that stood as the game’s only score. Goalkeeper Rylan Widrick made six saves. Elsewhere in Northern New York’s postseason, Brushton-Moira beat Norwood-Norfolk 12-0 and St. Lawrence Central defeated Lisbon 3-0 in Section X Class C semifinals. Those are separate games and brackets, not part of Copenhagen’s final.
