Election Day Tomorrow
Jefferson County voters head to the polls tomorrow. The county's election office lists voting hours from six in the morning until nine at night on Tuesday, November third. Early voting ended Sunday. Your Election Day location may differ from an early-voting site, so check your assigned polling place through the official state voter lookup before traveling. The county Board of Elections can help with polling-place questions. The election office's regular business hours are not the same as voting hours.
Zoo: Seasonal Hours
Zoo New York has moved to its seasonal visitor schedule, effective today. The Watertown attraction's operating-hours section lists Thursday through Sunday, eleven in the morning until three in the afternoon, with the last ticket sold at two thirty. The new schedule means the zoo is closed to visitors Monday through Wednesday. Check the specific seasonal schedule with the zoo before making a special trip, and allow time to enter before the last ticket is sold.
Mill Street Fire
An early morning fire damaged the former heating and plumbing building at Mill and Newell streets in Watertown today. The initial call came around 4:45 a.m., and crews were still at the scene at 8 a.m. Fire officials subsequently reported no injuries. The cause remains under investigation. The recorded video describes the initial report before the injury status was confirmed.
Heating Assistance
The regular Home Energy Assistance Program is scheduled to open today for the new heating season. It can help eligible households with heating costs, with eligibility depending on income, household circumstances and heating arrangements. Jefferson County directs residents to Social Services for application and status information. The county also warns that program dates can change with federal funding. Check current availability with the local office before relying on a payment. The regular benefit is separate from emergency heating assistance.
SUNY Application Waivers
Today is the final announced day of SUNY's free application period, which began October nineteenth. Prospective North Country students can apply to up to five campuses without the usual application fees through Apply SUNY or the Common App. In Apply SUNY, the first five campus fees are waived automatically. Common App users must select the SUNY fee-waiver option campus by campus. Other ongoing waivers may still be available after this promotional period. A waived application fee is not a promise of admission or free tuition.
National: Medicare
Nationally, Medicare's annual open-enrollment period remains underway through December seventh. This is the window when people with Medicare can review and, where permitted, change their health or prescription-drug coverage. Changes made during this period generally take effect January first. Medicare's official site explains the available choices based on current coverage. Compare plan details carefully, including doctors, medicines and costs. This is the Medicare enrollment window, which is separate from the health-insurance marketplace enrollment season discussed yesterday.
Watertown Weather
The National Weather Service forecast updated at 12:57 p.m. Eastern calls for mostly cloudy skies tonight, a low around 52 and south wind at 3 to 6 mph. Tuesday will be mostly cloudy with a high near 65 and a 40 percent chance of showers, mainly between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. South wind will be 7 to 10 mph. This updates the earlier forecast in the recorded video.
Local Fuel Prices
Finally, local fuel prices. Triple A's November second averages for Watertown and Fort Drum put regular at about four dollars thirty-seven cents a gallon, down about one and a half cents from yesterday. Diesel averages about six dollars forty-eight cents, up less than one cent. These are area averages, so prices at individual stations will differ.
