Malone, NY — August 8, 2025 — Andrea Dumas, currently serving as both Malone Village Mayor and a Franklin County legislator, has announced she is exploring a run for the New York State Assembly. This comes in response to the upcoming vacancy created by Assemblyman Billy Jones’s resignation. Jones is leaving the legislature to assume a vice-presidential role at Clinton Community College.
In a message posted on social media, Dumas highlighted her decade of service to Malone and Franklin County, affirming her commitment to maintaining momentum on local projects. “If I am given the opportunity to serve in the State Assembly,” she stated, “I will bring that same commitment to championing these projects and delivering results for our communities.”
High-profile support has already joined her potential bid. Congresswoman Elise Stefanik endorsed Dumas, praising her as a formidable candidate who could flip the seat Republican:
“I have spoken to numerous committee members, county leaders & chairs… and all are very excited about Andrea’s strong candidacy. Andrea will flip this seat Republican and defeat whatever Kathy Hochul rubber stamp Democrat is nominated.”
State Senator Dan Stec has also voiced his support.
On the Democratic side, Plattsburgh Town Supervisor Michael Cashman has announced he is pursuing his party’s nomination for the same Assembly seat.
The contested district spans all of Clinton and Franklin counties, as well as five towns in Essex County — previously represented by Jones, the North Country’s only Democratic Assembly member.
