Lewis County secures funding for village and hamlet streets
A $5.5 million state grant is expected to support sidewalks, crosswalks and other streetside improvements along county roads in Port Leyden, Beaver Falls and Turin. County leaders expect construction to begin in 2028. This is a funding milestone, with the work ahead. Local contributions have not disappeared; Turin’s project is still expected to require county money. The improvements are intended to serve people walking, cycling and driving through these communities.
Ogdensburg wraps up a larger paving season
Ogdensburg’s 2026 paving season brought new asphalt to 31 blocks across all or parts of six streets, using close to $1 million in state highway funding. City crews and private contractors shared the work, and some funding remains for next year. The city’s September notice identified portions of Hayward, Spring, Albany, North Meadow, Champlain and Anthony streets. That earlier notice describes the start of the project, rather than new parking restrictions for today.
Canton worker receives employment recognition
William Briggs of Canton, an employee of The Arc Jefferson-St. Lawrence, has been selected for employee-of-the-year recognition through New York State Industries for the Disabled. The Arc was also named NYSID’s 2026 member agency of the year. Briggs scans documents for the St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services, where he has worked for five years, and has been with The Arc for three decades. A recognition ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday in Schenectady.
Sackets Harbor girls turn early deficit into a win
Sackets Harbor defeated DeRuyter 6-2 in girls soccer on Tuesday, October 20. The visitors scored first before the Patriots tied the game, moved ahead and finished with a four-goal margin. The result concerns Tuesday’s completed game. The programme uses Sackets Harbor’s actual school logo for editorial identification, with no implication of school sponsorship.
Oswego County farm included in preservation awards
Kyle Farm in Oswego County is listed for a $958,883 farmland-protection award covering 203 acres used for grain and hay. Governor Kathy Hochul announced the wider round Tuesday: more than $48.5 million for 43 farms across New York, supporting protection of 16,005 acres. Those are statewide totals. The programme supports permanent agricultural conservation easements, and an award is distinct from a completed transaction.

National poll finds a divide in confidence in vote counting
An AP-NORC report released October 21 finds that 55% of registered Democrats and 38% of registered Republicans express a great deal or quite a bit of confidence that midterm votes will be counted accurately. Interviews were conducted October 8-12 among 1,119 adults, including 925 registered voters. The findings measure public confidence. They do not establish that votes have been miscounted.
